The Rwenzori Mountains, known as the ‘Mountains of the Moon’ due to the mist that constantly envelops their upper slopes, are Africa’s tallest mountain range and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Unlike the volcanic peaks of Uganda, the Rwenzoris ascend directly from the Rift Valley floor, forming a striking vertical landscape of glaciers, alpine bogs, and afro-montane forests. This area is home to 177 recorded bird species, including many unique to the Albertine Rift.
This five-day itinerary is designed around guided hikes and nature walks across rugged landscapes, offering expansive mountain vistas and abundant wildlife and birdwatching opportunities along the way. The trip concludes with a visit to a nearby community to explore how daily life is influenced by residing near these iconic mountains.
Depart Kampala in the morning and drive west toward Kasese, at the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains — Africa's tallest range and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known as the 'Mountains of the Moon' for the mist that constantly wreathes their upper slopes. Arrive at the trailhead lodge in the afternoon for a briefing on the days ahead, followed by dinner.
Set out on the first stage of the trek, climbing through dense montane forest alive with birdsong — the range holds 177 recorded bird species, many found only in the Albertine Rift. Reach your first camp by the afternoon, with time to rest and take in the surrounding ridgelines before dinner.
Continue climbing through the heather zone and alpine bogs that give the Rwenzoris their striking, otherworldly landscape. On clear days, the glaciers and snow-capped peaks come into view above the cloud line. Reach a higher camp for the night, with sweeping views over the valleys below.
Spend the morning exploring nearby ridgelines and viewpoints for expansive mountain vistas across the range, then begin the descent back toward the foothills, watching for birdlife and wildlife along the trail. Overnight at a lower camp.
Complete the descent to the trailhead, then visit a nearby community to learn how daily life is shaped by living beside these iconic mountains. After lunch, begin the drive back to Kampala, arriving in the evening with lasting memories of glaciers, forests, and the Mountains of the Moon.
