The Rwenzori Mountains, known as the ‘Mountains of the Moon’ due to the mist that constantly envelops their upper slopes, are Africa’s tallest mountain range and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Unlike the volcanic peaks of Uganda, the Rwenzoris ascend directly from the Rift Valley floor, forming a striking vertical landscape of glaciers, alpine bogs, and afro-montane forests. This area is home to 177 recorded bird species, including many unique to the Albertine Rift.
This five-day itinerary is designed around guided hikes and nature walks across rugged landscapes, offering expansive mountain vistas and abundant wildlife and birdwatching opportunities along the way. The trip concludes with a visit to a nearby community to explore how daily life is influenced by residing near these iconic mountains.
